Default things to look for buying used

Hi guys,
I am from Bundaberg, Australia and I am looking at buying my first Harley in a few days.
It is a Super Glide Custom '05 model. It has a full service history and manual.
Can you offer any advice on what to look for to make sure I get a good bike?
Thank
Bundy

Are you buying from a dealer or individual? Getting a fair price compared to new?

If the bike starts good and runs good and the service records seem authentic, go for it.

Can always be sure though by having someone in the know check it out for you.

Howdy Bundy. I am from down the bottom of South Australia. Mount Gambier. Good to see another Aussie on here.
I have a 2007 FXDC. Love it.
I would think if you have the books, and service records, shouldnt be a problem.
2005 is the last year before the change to the 6 speed box, so you would think they had sorted all the bugs out of the 88 TC by then.
Buy, and enjoy.

Look it over very carefully just like you would a used car. Take special notice of any new footpegs or other parts that don't seem to be original or in the same condition as the pegs, etc. on the bike. Look at the underside of the pipes for any scrapes and look underneath the bike at the little frame tab that extends down in the center of the bike to protect the oil pan. See if that is all scraped up or in good condition.

If anything has been replaced, the big question would be why? If it was for cosmetic reasons (chrome covers, etc.) ask if they still have the stock part, just in case you want to put the bike back to stock at some point. Finally, if everything checks out, then buy it and ride it knowing that the bike has been well cared for.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies, it took me ages to find this thread again.
I ended up buying it, it looks clean and cared for.
It has 28 000 about 18 000 miles on the clock.
It has a few scrapes on the pipes but it was all clean underneath.
It has a tick in the upper end that is not very loud but comes about half throttle whilst on the cruise. I have a 3 month warranty and mentioned it when I test rode it. The salesman said it was the new motor(twin cam).

I bought it from a HD dealership but it is a 300 miles away.

Do you guys hear any cam noises or upper cylinder noises at all.
It isn't very loud but I can still hear it[:'(]
Let me know if the motor should be totally quiet or if I am a fussy bastard...hehehe
hiya down south Soarer, I guess there would be a few Aussies here
I will post some pics when I take them
Cheers

Sorry, I meant the new style twin cam motor not the Evo. Most of my mates have evos that's why I was wondering about the tick I can hear. I changed the oil the other day and it came out really clean with 4000kms on it.
I will try and attach a pic, it is not very good quality.
I followed the how to add a pic it didn't work???
