Fork Oil
Merry Christmas folks!!!
I have a little time off over the holidays and would like to change the front tire on my ride and change the fork oil at the same time. I have an 06 WideGlide and I do have the manual for it. It would have you tear the whole fork apart, all I want to do is change the fluid. If it comes out really dirty then I'll have to break it down and do some cleaning. Can I get away with just removing the caps and pouring the old out then refill from the top with out complete disassebly??? Manual say 26.5 oz of fluid. I am also changing to the Screaming Eagle oil. Thanks for your help!

TMAce - I don't see why you can't get her on a lift, take the front wheel / fender / brake off and slide the tubes out and drain the oil that way. Be careful there is pressure on the fork tube nuts.
Maybe even flush with mineral spirits or de-natured alcohal - something that won't damage the seals.
I changed my fork oil @ 4500 miles when I painted the sliders and it looked nasty. there was gunk in the bottom of the tube I had to scrape out with a rag tied to a rod.
l'll be changing mine at regular (maybe 5k intervals) until it starts looking clean. But I have drain screws so I can pump it out.
Good luck dd

DynaDon - Thanks for the reply. Yea, I kinda figured I have to break it down to clean but just trying to line up my options if on the off chance the fluid is reasonably clean. I wishmine had drains!
Happy Holidays!

I have an '05 Superglide that I hit a bump with out on the Interstate....it put a dent in the front fender from hitting the highway bar that cost me $70.00 to get out....I had the dealer put in SE and it stiffened the up AND down just enough to solve the problem.

harley did ya'll a favor by eliminating those pesky ol' drain screws, and they cast the inner primary to accept only their primary chain tensioner, no after market for you guys with 06 and newer. this ensures the owners will visit the dealers on a regular basis. ya'll have a merry one.

As there are no forklegdrain screws on the newer models would it be possible to syphon out the oil with a thin tube?
I,ve not looked into the possibility as yet but it would save a lot of time / aggravation.

I have an '02 fxdwg3. I have factory manual and I see I have drain screw. On my Vulcan I was able to drain forks with tubes on bike after taking caps off and springs out. It looks like you have to take forks out of trees, since a bolt runs through the top. Were you able to do with out dissassemby?
