Default Kuryakyn forwards install ?

I was out putting the Kuryakyn forwards on my scoot tonight (06 lowrider) and I ran in to one thing I need to ask about. When putting the original shifter on the kuryakyn spline I see there is a o-ring on the spline, the shifter will go on but it won't go over that o-ring without trashing it? I would guess I need to get the shifter on past where the o-ring and grove for it are so I can catch the rest of the spine on the other side of it so it will be pulled up snug against the back side of the mounting bracket before tightening down the shifter. I hope this makes sense as It is easy to look at but hard to explain when typing. My guess is to just take the o-ring off as that is there just to keep it in place for shipping but wanted to check first??? I also searched for pics to see if i have the brake pedal and shifter in close proximity before tightening but i didn't have much luck finding any close ups. Thanks for your time, Mojo

Maybe I just needed to walk away and it will come to me

Did mine a few weeks ago on an FXDC. I don't remember an o-ring as you describe.

There is a pretty well documented issue with the groove in the Kury spline not being deep enough to accommodate the bolt that goes through the shift lever. If that doesn't make any sense, it will soon

So I guess what I am saying is - I didn't come across an o-ring where (I think) you are referring to. A pic would help, but for me I just put the shift lever over the Kury spline, and then ran the bolt through the opposite direction from "normal" to get it to go through the groove in the shaft.

Not sure if that is a help

That makes alot of sense, Thanks! I would guess that o-ring is sitting in the groove where the bolt ends up needing to go and was there to just keep it in place for shipping so the spline didn't slide all the way thru the bracket. I will go look at it again and will probably realize about the bolt not fitting like you mentioned. Not sure what putting the bolt in from the opposite direction would help but I will go look closer and thanks again for your help!!!! Mojo

By coming in with the bolt from the threaded side (and a bunch of WD-40) I was able to use the leverage and rotation of the bolt through the threads in the shift lever to get it through the mis-fitted groove in the spline shaft. You'll see what I mean. There's a few threads on the problem.

There's a guy here (2007fxdc) who has posted on this topic a bunch. There may be better solutions, but that's what I came up with.

Good luck, keep asking here - lots of us have done it.

TurkeyRun, Thanks again for your help. I took the o-ring off and put the shifter on and tapped it a couple times with a rubber mallet and it snugged right up and then put the bolt in and it fit fine. I actually didn't have a problem with the bolt not fitting in the groove correctly once it was all the way on the spline it lined up perfectly. Appreciate your time bro! Now if i could get it off the jack and go ride but that foot of snow in the driveway puts a damper on that. I may drive around in circles in my garage and hope no one sees me Mojo

Congrats on the forwards mojo and I bet it was fun doing a little wrenching while waiting for the weather. I know it was a great day when I put mine on,I stood back and said yea that'll do nicely.

Cool - maybe they finally fixed it

BTW - make sure you read the other threads about these, some folks have reported the footpeg bolts coming loose on these. I check mine before every ride, so far - so good.

Enjoy!

The old Kuryakyn forward control issues revisited once again huh guys? Since my name was mentioned in this thread, I'll give my 2 cents (once again).

First, off, I put a set of 06's on my 07 because they hadn't come out with any yet that said they were for fitment on an 07. That may have been the root of a couple of my issues since it sounds like at least one thing has been corrected. I don't remember there being any o-ring on the spline. However, there was also no "groove" either so that might explain why I couldn't get the stock pinch bolt to fit back into the threads on the other side of my shift lever. I improvised and used a smaller bolt and through bolted it with a washer and lock nut on the other side. The only other issue I had was that one of the supplied bolts for the shift linkage was the wrong thread for the HD linkage. All I had to do was take it to the hardware store and find the exact same bolt in the right thread.

The peg mount issue that Turkey is referring to is not a widespread problem that I'm aware of. However, my right side peg mount used to come loose now and then. I could always hand tighten it enough to get home and use a wrench on it. However, one day when tightening at home, the head of the bolt broke right off with hardly any pressure applied to it. That was most likely due to all the tightening I had done to it before. I had the ISO footpegs with the heelrests/stirrups and I think putting pressure on the stirrups is what caused the loosening over time. I've since changed to pegs with no stirrups. I recommend using a generous amount of blue loctite on the footpeg mounting bolts and allow it time to set before going out riding. Also add those bolts to your checklist to check often and be careful not to overtighten them. And, while riding, before you decide to put a lot of weight on your pegs to shift around on the bike or, for some crazy reason, stand up on the pegs, keep in mind that there is only the one bolt between holding your feet off the ground and an ugly crash. They are footpegs, not body pegs so don't get overconfident in their ability to hold your entire weight.I had to buy a new pegmount and bolt and installed them with plenty of loctite and have not had any issues with it even getting loose on me since.

Mojo, I'm not sure what you are after as far as pics go. Your brake lever should be adjusted up as close to the pegmount without touching it as it can be when tightened. Your shift lever should be adjusted on the spline to where you feel comfortable with it. There is no set position for the shift lever. I put on my riding boots and adjusted the shift lever to where I could easily fit my boot under it yet gave me the least amount of effort to shift as possible. It works great when I'm wearing those boots. But, when I ride with something a little less substantial on my feet, I'll sometimes miss a shift - especially going from 1st to 2nd when I'll end up hitting neutral instead. I've pretty much gotten used to it though and rarely miss shifts anymore. Here are a couple of pix but I'm not sure if they will help you or not.
