you don't have to go up to the 18" wheels, you can use the 17" also. (the max is an 18")
i know the fxdwg and fxdl rear fenders are different widths, but the swingarm and main frame is the same other than rake in the front and triple trees. i put a chrome deuce rear wheel (17") on my 02 fxdwg with a 180 tire with no modifications. that same wheel should go on your fxdl, but a 160 tire would be the widest that would fit inside your rear fender. you might look at the deuce rear wheels (17" versions) - you can pick them up on ebay fairly inexpensive, especially if they are not chromed. just a thought - an 18" is not the only other option to the 16" you have now.

it seems to me you can get a 16x4.25 rim. they do have them.
I don't think you should do over a 140 on a 3.5" rim.

i know this is an old thread: just want to say the 17" rim has more radial tires available, the 18" size doesn't.
