V&H Short shot - how loud are they?
So I'm already planning upgrades for the SuperGlide. I'm looking at the V&H Shortshots now, but I'm curious about how loud they are - I want better performance, and something a bit better sounding than the stock ones, but I also don't want to irritate every cop in the county, if you know what I mean. So, how loud are they, and how irritating is the sound? What are some good alternatives out there to uncork the Twinkie?

If your worried about irritating the cops, then maybe these are not the right pipes for you.
They are loud, and would probably not pass any noise ordinance (if it was actually enforced).
At idle, they are not too bad though. Very good sound there. But if you crack the throttle 1/4 turn or more, they get very loud!
They do make a "quiet" baffle for them though, but I don't know how much that quiets them down.
All of that being said, sound is such a subjective thing. What one person might think is too loud, could very well be the perfect sound to the next person.

I have them on my '08 FXDC. The stock baffles were very load, even while cruising in
6th, although the idle was awesome. I soon installed the "quiet baffles". They are definetly not quiet, but not as deafening as the stock baffles. The idle still sounds great, but most of all, the cruising noise is now bearable. Go for it. I can't speak to the performance question because I had them installed when I bought the bike.

I'll ditto the comment on the quiet baffle.... I've got the straight shots, and they were deafening...... the Q-baffle made them just right. Took the edge off the pulse, gave it a deep rumble, and didn't give me a headache.
Have been past several cops who didn't give me a second glance.... 'course I wasn't jacking the throttle either....

In follow-up to my earlier reply, and to archergodwin's...
You can control the sound pretty good with the throttle. In town around cops, don't get on it through the gears and you will be fine. My only negative is that I have some popping when backing off the throttle, but you can control that also.
