Hey guys, there is a sick fat bob in the "Nice Fat Bob" thread. Whoever did the work on this bike painted the headlight housing black. Anyone know how difficult this would be to do on your own? Any warnings/advice?
Not difficult at all, 1 days work... sand/scotch the chrome down. Powdercoat or spray epoxy enamel color.
Just be careful when removing the lamp, don´t scratch the triples. Cover well.
Just did this the other day, and what Bosken said is right. I used sandpaper (320grit) to scratch the surface up, then used a black primer, then sprayed on the paint. Before I sprayed the primer, I washed the part off really good and tried not to touch it bare hands (oils on figers). Then after the primer dried I used a scotch pad (grey, not real abrasive) to clean up the primer finish then washed it again and then sprayed color.Turned out great.
Good luck.
I went with the powder coating. The powder coater media blasted the entire housing and ring then powder coated with the very high gloss "black ink". Looks great. I went with the powder coating because here in south florida the bugs can be pretty bad during certain times of the year and I thought the powder coating would be more durable. Total cost $45.00, well worth it
