Swirls/Fine Scratches on Vivid Black
I posted this in the Detailing Section but thought I'd share with the
Dyna crowd.
Bike (Vivid Black) is 4 years old and pristine with the exception of some swirls and light scratches on my tank that were driving me nuts.
I had been using Mequires Scratch X and saw a new product at Wally-World - Meguires Scratch X 2.0.
Did some web research and found a couple car boards where the posters swore by the 2.0.
Posters said 2.O was better than the original version.
The tips they provided were:
- plan to use multiple applications
- use some elbow grease
- rather than keep rubbing for an extended period of time, add more product then rub some more.
Well it works GREAT!!!
Took off all the swirls and fine scratches after 4 applications.
BTW I called Meguires HOTLINE and they confirmed that the above method was recommended by Meguires
I just finished it off with a coat of paste wax and I'm very pleased with the results and how the tank looks.

i don't think the claybar will work for the swirls/scratches - thats mostly to get other contaminants off the paint so you don't grind them in while using a rubbing compound like scratchX (and make sure you use a spray like the detailer while you are using it to lubricate the process - when in doubt, more lube )
i bought my 09 used, as the guy at the HD dealer said - looked like someone had washed it with a brillo pad. I spent just about an hour on it with new microfiber cloths and scratchX, followed by a nice coat of zaino bros. wax (best out there imo), and i promise it looks brand new - no swirls, and no marks on her now. I figured it'd come out nice, but it really impressed even me.
great stuff for vivid black

Blargh is correct, the clay bar is for bonded contaminants. It should be used before you compound the surface. I haven't used the 2.0 yet but I do know the Ultimate Compound by Mequiars works like magic and unless you have some really bad areas it's a single application product. A buddy of mine had a scratch in his tank that required a 2000 grit wet sand to get rid of, I followed up the sanding with some of the compound and it was like glass in a single application.
