Its not that hard to do really, you dont have to reroute much wiring either, just one bundle with 3 wires in it, you do have to extend it though, approximately 6 inches. Here are a couple pics of my install, you should be able to figure out how to do most of it with the pics. You also dont have to remove the tank, but it definitely makes it easier. I used an oem key switch, made a plate to mount it to on top of the plate already on the tank, and I just used spacers from lowes to get the switch to the height I wanted. I would recommend using a 2" hole saw, and some sort of grommet to take up the extra space on the console.
In these pictures, the switch is a little high, I actually adjusted it back down to correct height. Keep in mind, you can also just drill holes in the console and mount the switch to those, but I dont like that look, looks much cleaner this way.
Also, when you do it my way, I recommend getting some orings to put between the new plate, and the factory one, I had trouble with gas leaking at first, until I added some orings in the middle.

Thanks to your ideas in your post, I'm going to just mod the original FXDB dash panel, and mount the keyswitch in it. If I'm unhappy about how it turns out, I can always bite the bullet and buy the FXDWG dash.
Thanks again,
Kent
