+1 You sure got that right Sarge

To the OP:

The 07 has so many mechanical pluses over the older bike _and_it is a blank canvas. (Not that the 05 is a bad bike by any means either.) Believe me from experience when I say; It may be costly to make your Harley yours but I doubt there's more fun to be had. Most of the fun is in hunting down just the right part at the best price. What ever you do buy a manual and do it yourself. You'll find it a very rewarding change from the chores of daily life.

The Lowrider is a sweet bike but the SB has a lot more going for it, as you can see by the responses so far. Looks like we might have made up your mind for you.
Whatever you get, be sure to post some pics. Enjoy it.

After 4 years of riding metrics, I'm wanting to jump into the Harley world. I"ve done a bunch of research and test rides and have it narrowed down to what I want that is within my budget. A street bob or a low rider.

So here it is. I've got two bikes within reach.

A 2005 Low Rider. Tutone paint. Fuel injected. Loaded (Saddle bags, sissy bar, chrome, etc.) And a 2007 Street Bob (pewter denim) with sissy bar and aftermarket seat.

I'm torn a bit between the two. I love the street bob's simplicity and lack of polishing/waxing requirements, yet still love the look of a fine chromed up and polished bike. I guess for me it comes down to reliability. I don't have a ton of knowledge regarding mechanical reliability of harleys, so I'll ask you guys.

I feel comfortable on both, but which one can I rely on mechanically for a good few years down the road? (both bikes have 10k miles).

What would you choose?

Thanks!!

As far as the 2005 Low Rider I would look for at least a 2006 and up, that's when they made a lot of improvements to the Dyna's (6 speed trans, 49mm forks, Mid Glide front end, 160 rear tire, battery box, headlight, etc.) . Check out the links in the below quote:

Being the proud owner of an 05 FXDLI, I was somewhat offended by the link describing the 05 Dyna Superglide Low Rider FXDL, then I scrolled down to the stats and everything was metric! The L/Rs aren't made any more, does that make them any more valuable probably not, does everybody own one? don't think so, will they turn heads? Still do. The 96" with the 6 speeds, 49 mm tubes and hydraulic tensioners all good upgrades, your call. I'll stick with my L/R.

Thanks for all the replies! It helps!

Think right now I am leaning to the Bob, love the denim paint.

Gonna ride each again I think before I chose tho!

Well, after much deliberation and test riding, I chose a 2005 low rider. Found one with 5500 miles with some nice chrome upgrades.

Tested some 07 street bobs and dynas, as well as an 04 dyna and the low rider I picked up. Honestly I didn't feel I needed the upgrades done in '06, aside from maybe the cam tensioners... but that wasn't a 2000 dollar decision for me.

Drove my old bike 100 miles to do a partial trade on the low rider, and wow. So much more comfortable, handled a bit better and huge power difference! Cruising at 65 was easy as cake! Didn't feel the need for another gear as I did with my Vulcan.

All in all I'm pretty stoked about it. Gonna go for another spin!

Thanks all for the info!
