96 Engine Work worth it?
Hey Man
I think , it is your bike and you can do what you want to it . Why do some people buy Jap bikes ? If you have an idea go for man , it's your money and your bike . Yes I did some up grades to mine .

I put a stage 1 set up with SE air and V&H big rad pipes on my 06 WG and WOW!!! that woke it up and put grins on my face I still haven't lost. Now I have the Ultra with the 96" and rather than SE kit, I'm going withPC-V, ANDREWS 48H cam and stock pipes. (I will uprade exhaust only if the upgrade doesn't give the desired results) SE on the WG cost me over $1700 using dealer install. Im in less than $900 parts only now for my ultra. I will do this one with the help of a respected gearhead I ride with who has tons of experience with cam conversions and performance upgrades. I will take the bike to PC dynajet so they can dial in the best map. I will post the build and results in coming weeks. Still waiting for my cams. Sure glad its too cold to ride right now.
Stage 1 SERT with slip on pipes and SE air cleaner is all I will do. I want to keep the re-sale value and more people want a stock engine when buying used.
I ride with all bagger guys and my Dyna has a really good stage 1 SERT tune so I am always first anyway. I rode a 88 bored to 95 and there was not enough difference to make it worth it IMO. Going superfast is not for a Harley.
Most guys I have met who spend $2-3000 on engine builds will admit later that they won't do it again.

When I see 2-3 year old Dyna's going for 6k or so...I think resell for me....it out of the question.
However, the more stock you do leave your bike..the broader the market is for used.
Guess it depends on your plans, I see resell pop up every now and then...and I just don't plan to lose 8k+ selling my bike two years later. I don't put money into my hobbies expecting a profit...just satisfaction of playing with my toys.

Wow. My experience is the total opposite. Guys I know and ride with are all happy with their decision to do performance mods! Most even want to do more.
I agree, I have quite a few $$$ in mine and don't regret it for one moment! It's all about doing what you want to make it the way you want. I don't worry about resale value either cause people will only pay what they think it's worth and not what it says in a book.
I just got my bike back. Went to 107", lots into it. Working on a write-up for the forums. Probably have it up next week. I'll just say that anyone who says going big on a Harley isn't worth it hasn't ridden one or has a different definition of fun than me. End result on my bike: 118 HP - 130 TQ. And it rides like a BEAST!
This is an excellant thread. Had the same thing on my mind for a while.
I've done the stage one and definately feel its worth it. I had the biggest grin on my face when I first rolled my bike out of the garage after a stage 1 upgrade and rolled on the throttle.
I've been thinking of going for a full stage 3 install at an indy for about $4k including tune. But, I dont think $4k would give me good value for money, plus I too am concerned about long-term reliability.
The screaming eagle Stage 2 103" kit with cams seems a bargain for less than 1k. I'm leaning towards this right now. Im hoping staying at stage 2 with a 103" would hopefully be a good balance between increased power and reliability.
Am inerested what some others think...

OK, so Stage one is a must. That I get. If at some point the bike has to go on-sale, engine work might be a deterrent. However, this can get "addictive" and lead to an all out performance search. That pretty much sums it up for me but, how about reliability. Will engine work shorten the life of the engine, even when avoiding the "ride it like you stole it"? and, are Harley Kits a safer route that might increase reliability, when compare to other brads, as well as resale value? Are "Harley Only" kits worth it? Once again thanks for your inputs ahead of time.
