Ditto...at 50 mph in 4th gear my bike's only turnin' 2500 rpms. I never use 5th gear until 60 mph and the motor's only turning 2600 rpms.

I try to stay between 2600-2800 rpms when criusin'.

I have been wanting to invest in a tachometer that way I can judge the rpm's better. To me the thunderheader makes it sound like you are at a higher RPM than you really are, just my opinion though.

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate it.
What you are doing by rolling power on at too low of an RPM is like taking a hammer to the inside of your engine and beating the rod bearings to an early death. You don't need an oil additive you need to learn how to ride.

When just cruising is there a certain speed that is best to shift at?

I have been shifting into 2nd = 20mph, 3rd at 30mph, 4th at 40mph, 5th at 50mph and 6th at 60mph. Like I said before my pipe really makes the rpm's sound high.

I'd say you're shifting too soon even for just cruising.
If you grab a handful of throttle and you hear pinging you need to downshift. It's just like an automatic transmission in a car going into passing gear, gotta keep the RPM's up when passing.
Learn to ride with a bit more RPM so you're not lugging the engine.

You are talking two different things but I will address pinging which I think you are talking about. Synthetic oil is not going to measureable affect this. You need a better grade of gas and lower gear for more RPM. You are putting too much load on it not matter what you think the RPM is. You can be going 65 in 5th at 3000 rpm and WOT on a hill and cause it to ping. A higher octane gas will burn slower and not explode like a lower grade which causes the ping which is the piston ,valves and crank bearings shaking but even that will not help if you have too much load on it.

Thanks for all the info. I think I need to invest in a tach, since it's obvious I can't really judge engine rpm by ear.

On the Lucas oil stabilizer, how do you come up with 20oz?

Great post was experiencing that annoying pinging\ticking noise as well and it seems louder since I installed the Rineharts. How do you add that Lucas oil, do you replace the 20 oz. of 20w50 or do you add it after and is Amsoil better than the HD synthetic oil. Thanks

I appreciate any help..... Thanks
You are ruining your motor.

If anything I am trying to baby my motor and take it easy. I don't dog out anything I own. I do understand (now) that the ticking/pinging is caused by lugging. I will just keep the motor in the higher RPM's from now on, even if it seems to high.
