Back Firing
I have a 2006 Dyna Wide Glide and it seems to backfire alot. I have noticed everytime I shift it backfires I was told it needed a new exhust, then was told to buy a power comander, another mechanic said I need to replace the stock air cleaner with something else. I am here asking you because with so many different responses I do not want to keep adding parts and not fix the problem. What have some of you done to rectify this?
Husband says backfiring talked to him on his lunch break and he said that when we bought it they claimed to of replaced the spark plugs, I could not get the air cleaner cover off but will have him look tonight.
We have looked for leaks that is why I have taken it to three different dealers to see if they could find out what was happening and that is when they tell me I need all these different parts. If I could of gotten straight answers from any of them I would of done it but they always say I think this would fix it. When I ask what if it does not then they say we will try something else. All I see is money going out of my pocket and no promise it will not be a waste.
A couple of questions, are you the original owner? If not, do you know if any changes have been done to the engine? The dealers want to get in your wallet.Try changing the stock air filter and ask the dealer what the cost will be for a re-flash of the ECM. Another thing is, if the operator is shifting at high rpms, most exhaust (with out any fuel management) will pop on decel in the mufflers. just going on my experience with the HD.

We are not the first owners we just purchased the bike maybe a month and a half ago. There is no engine modifications done but it does not have original exhust on it. They replaced the exhust it had on it to this one because it was an after market and it was not getting the back pressure from it. I will talk to the last mechanic I took it to and get more information from him because it is going back into his shop tomorrow to get new wheels and sprocket put on it.
There's guaranteed to be someone with the answer you're looking for on this forum but we need to know what pipes you're running now, what baffles they have (if any) and if the ecu has been flashed for stage 1 or not. Ditch the dealerships and find a good independent shop. 9 times out of 10 an indy will be cheaper AND more trustworthy.
