I am the proud new owner of a 2001 FXDXT. The bike has the factory bags and quick detach hardware. I would like to install a passenger backrest but am worried about mounting the side plates under the bag rails. Dose anyone have any suggestions or solutions? My local dealership's parts department has been no help with finding a solution.
I fabbed up a double set of QD points on the struts; had to clearance the bag mounts a little bit but now I can run clean or with a backrest and bags or with a solo rack and a bag on the solo rack...longer bolts and a QD kit were the only parts needed. Could do some pics later if you need...
I recall I used some stainless bolts and washers; probably from Home Depot...and a little collar cut from a piece of stainless tubing. Also had to cut a threaded coupler to extend the lower fender mount and trim the back of the bags with a small grinder...go slow and you'll get it easy...I've also combined pieces from two docking kits so a QD rack could be used with permanent bags...
Nice Pictures, I picked up everything awhile back to do the same thing but have not gotten around to it yet, I'm thinking about going to a wide glide bobtail fender but that will take some fabricating for the bag locks!
The Ex got everything except my ride now I need to get a garage so I can work on my bike, I have a ton of stuff I want to do to it, I powder coated all my mid controls wrinkle black and have to put them back on, not real fond of the FWD controls! I have 90% of my 103" parts, not that it needs the power but it will look sweet with the SE 103 heads
