From a wideglide to sporty weight difference is 90 to 100 pounds depending on which sporty it is. The overall gearing for each gear is fairly close in the gears. Its the primary that is different it looks like.

On paper, the Sporty is only a little lighter, but if you pull my bike out of the garage, then get on the Sporty to move it, it feels like a bicycle. There has to be at least 150 lbs difference in my two bikes.

EDIT: I just looked on line, and the 97 Sporty 1200 custom is listed at 489 dry weight. The 2011 WG is listed at 647 dry weight. 158 lbs difference. I wasn't too far off...

There's an old saying... "There's always something faster"
...and another: "Racing Harleys is like racing sailboats. Even if you got a fast one, it still isn't fast"

Had a cat we rode with back 10 years ago or so that had a Sporty, and could flat ride the hell out of it. He would smoke us in town and from slow starts, but if we were rolling down the highway, we could roll it on and we would leave him. I was always impressed with how fast it was, and he was an awesome rider to boot. I have always wanted a sporty, but they don't fit my 6'3/215 frame all that well.

I have owned to Sportsters, a 72 bored with pipes, mikuni, cams and it was damn fast. I had a Nightster too and it was pretty quick and I think would beat my superglide off the line, but the big bikes have it on the upper end....In other words , don't screw with a sportster at a light....

My riding buddy has had 2 sporties lately.

1st was a 2003 883 built up to a 1200 with major head work and a mid range cam. This thing would keep up with my CVO 110 springer, sometimes beat me. However by 95CI 2000 FXDX would beat it when it was low geared. After re-gearing back to stock they were pretty even.

He has a 2007 sportie now which also is a 883 build to a 1200. It is a little slower than my FXDX. Off the line and on a medium speed roll. Freeway speeds the FXDX kills it even with my 5 speed. Sporties can be very fast especially when people build them and lighten them up. The old mechanic at the dealer drags a sportie when the HD drags comes around and it ain't bad...
