Question-'89 FXRP Defender Police bike?
I just bought a second bike. Its a 1989 FXRP Police Special DEFENDER with less than 9,500 miles. Its bone stck and in very good condition.
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a stock 1380 EVO and this bikes engine or transmission. In other words what's so special about this "Police Special"
I'll pick up the bike next week. As far as I can tell looks like the same EVO engine on my 1998 EVO Superglide.

Frame is pretty much the same as the FXDWG (Wide Glide)....I've heard that quality control was more of an issue on Police bikes, but I've also heard that it wasn't, so don't really know about that....engine and transmission, etc. are for the most part like the FXDWG too....nice bikes.

Yes dual disc on the front. This is the "Defender" model. Here's a couple of pic's the bike was in storage for about 8 years. (Sorry for the poor pictures.) Was pulled out of the public works garage and taken to local HD for general evaluation. Fires right up and runs strong, just needs a little cleaning.
Would really like to hook up with someone who knows about police specials.
So far the only things I have found out was:
- The motor company got the bugs out in 1988 & 1989. This is a 1989.
- 1st & second gear are different than stock bikes allowing for winding it out higher.
- Frame was at its best this year
There must be more to these than this.....

RE: Question-'89 FXRP Defender Police bike?
Well your bike looks like mine did in 84.So as far as I can tell the FXRP's have the 80 ci inengine with a wet chain drive and wet clutch, dual 11 1/2" front disk brakes and longer front forks than a standard FXR of the same year. They also came with the 5800 rev limiter that is a Screaming Eagle part number. The pistons are "notched" on my bike to allow for higher lift camshafts and bigger valves.Im not sure about your model.
I bought mine new in Febuary of 1984.A good buddy of mine bought an 86 FXRS.I think his had a belt drive.
Whenever we went riding we ended up racing a few times.I would absolutely WALK away from him at any speed roll on or standing start.
I still have the bike and it will roll like a bat out of hell.I think it is quicker than my 06 wide glide.
