Default Street Bob Brembo caliper upgrade

G'day chaps,

After to-ing and for-ing between brake upgrade or rear shocks, it looks like I'll be doing the brake upgrade first.

I have a 2006 Street Bob.

So, a few questions of you all;

1. Will I need to upgrade my master cylinder
2. Can I reuse my existing brake lines and lever
3. Should I convert to a twin disc? If so what's involved
4. What other things should I be aware of.

Thanks in advance,

Swifty

The touring "HD Brembo" calipers will not work on a 2006 ~ current FXD. The caliper mounts were moved up to accommodate the rotors that were changed from 11 1/2" to 300mm. The HD "Brembo" caliper mounting is made longer to accommodate the 300mm rotors but NOT changing caliper mounting on the FL sliders.

There have been some who have done this on this forum but the brake pads hang over the rotor and there is now no unswepted area on the outside diameter of the rotor. That unswepted area is what holds the rotor together as it strengthens the rotor. The brake pads, when they get worn down can eventually start touching each other and you can figure out what will happen next. I have included pictures and posted many times on this subject. Use the search button.

I have done this but my bike is a 2002. The calipers bolt right up to the fork lowers. The proper way is to get 11.8" (300mm) rotors so that the pads do not hang over the stock 11.5" rotors.

If you stay with single disc you can keep your master cylinder however if you are switching to dual you need an 11/16" or whatever the bore is on the bagger master cylinders as the single bore master cylinder is 9/16". You can use your existing brake lines but I would get steel braided as the braking power will be much better and why bother upgrading calipers and keeping the stock rubber lines. that would be like buying a corvette with a pinto motor in it.

If you want to go to dual disc you need a different lower on the right side, a different wheel so you can bolt the second rotor to the wheel, and a different master cylinder as well.

I have done this on my FatBob. I will probably upgrade the rotors sometime next year. These are an obvious improvement but I didn't know about upgrading the master cylinder.

Been wanting a bracket to mount one on the rear. Somebody has to have one somewhere.

Default Absolutely the best upgrade!

Swifty, I have an '06 Streetbob and did the Dual disc upgrade you're considering. I posted results and will include the URL for it, but the bottom line is: fantastic difference in braking. Saved my butt more than once. Howard at Motorcyclemetal.com did the conversion for me. Since then I've gone on to add Ohlins suspension improvements, but the brakes are #1 in importance to me when it comes to improving on OEM equipment. Here's the write-up:
