I thought the mileage was a typo.......ugggggbhhh I was trying to take it seriously. Oh we'll since its not....the 02 is the way to go. Less miles more power. I'd swap out cams n gears and ride the **** out of it. You'll be pleased .

 

I cant give you a tech answer and which model had which flaws but to me if your looking at which bike will be more reliable down the road I am going guess the bike with 30,000 less miles would be the one

 

+1 on the 02 and look at the cam tentioners in about 20,000 miles, engine will have no issues with upgrading to gear drive cams if and when you want, people say they are loud but I can't hear them over the exhaust anyway LOL My 88 had plenty of power but went 103" and love it

 

The '02 is the right answer. The "thing" you are looking for was posted early on. The solid crankshaft in the '02 still has it in the good range of motors, the mileage/price ratio is the bonus.

Like Dandfxdx says, the only real issue of concern is the cam chain tensioners which should be checked and replaced later in life. It's not all that hard and not too expensive. They we are, then sort of crumble, then cause damage. Don't let that scare you though, it's not like all these bikes are just falling apart. Just do the checks and replace when you see signs. There is a lot of info out there on this issue.

Other than that, an '02 model is a solid bike that will give you years of pleasure.

 

'02 with much less miles...easy decision.
