Thanks Guys! That DK cleaner is where I'm going. You guys are awesome! When I first got on the forum, my mind was reeling with the knowledge I was reading and I don't want to jump to quick on something I didn't need...$$$. This thread helped a lot, sorry for asking (to some) very simple questions. I just got this bike and want to give her the best without taking out another loan. Rick PS I don't want the fastest bike, just one that runs sweet and clean............ Thanks again

I have the K&N street metal intake that I purchased for $161.00 and I've have seen them cheaper more recently. I only have Python slip-on mufflers and no fuel management. My bike runs totally fine. I pulled my plugs the other day and they looked fine. I want a fuel management some day. Will probably just throw on some xieds or a fuelpak and call it a day...

That should do it, I have the 587 cleaner and xieds. Great price and help from DK, although there are so many deals on the internet, its worth a look around. I would also check your pipes for leakes though, as it doesnt hurt to tighten things up. You should expect some popping and grumbling even after, although not what I would call a backfire. Even a perfectly tuned engine has unburnt fuel in the exhaust but usually the muffler takes care of quieting the ignition of it. With hi flow pipes you'll hear it some.

If you want the best for your bike, you might want to avoid the oiled-gauze type filters. They don't stop dirt nearly as well as paper filters, and while they may flow better initially than paper filters, airflow goes way down as they start to collect a little dirt.

The Screaming Eagle non-oiled cleanable filter may give the best of both worlds.

Really, I thought they all did that? So basically, they flow better than paper filters untill they collect a little dirt. Then they flow just as good as a clean paper filter?

No. Flow will quickly go below that of a good quality paper filter, when they have been fed equal amounts of dirt. Even though the paper filter will have trapped more of that dirt.

I only use them when space restrictions make them necessary, or when the filter will get wet, like on one of my supercharged vehicles. I believe the non-oiled Screaming Eagle filter will be fine wet too though. At least it's still worked fine for me when it got drenched.

OK Man. I was going to leave it alone. But since you asked.
You said that they initially flow better than paper.

while they may flow better initially than
Then you said give them "Egual" amounts of dirt

when they have been fed equal amounts of dirt
So they would have equal amounts of restriction. But, since the oil filter started out with more flow. It should still have more flow than paper. Not this \/ \/ \/

Flow will quickly go below that of a good quality paper filter
Now PROVE IT.

It would seem that way, intuitively, but that's not the way it actually works.

Here's one test of a bunch of different filters, including a K&N.
http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html

Note that the AC paper filter not only traps a lot more dirt, but also doesn't load up (lose flow) as quickly. The K&N quickly becomes more restrictive than the AC paper filter.
