Looks like some thread going straight down. Is it long or deep enough to have a bolt it? Maybe give that a try. Other than that what age is the battery? Maybe time to just replace it.

Clean it up ... file it down ( be careful not to short it out ) ... screw a stud in it and put the cable back on ( Be sure that the height of the stud offers clearance .

Battery is only 2 years old and in good condition, the too long bolt created the thread down in the lead but is not very deep and would not have any strength, was thinking that I could drill and tap the lead, would need at least 1/2" depth for a thread, maybe a stud with a wood screw on one end would be stronger in the lead, or attach an angle bracket with 1 or maybe 2 small wood screws in the lead?

Johnny,
It's time for a new battery.

I agree that it's time for a new battery. You'll have more trouble than it's worth if you try to put a temporary kind of fix on it.

It looks like the only thread that was ever on that lug is what is in the bottom of it. I'd try what Uncle Larry said first. Then try your idea. Worst comes to worst the battery is duff and then buy a new one.
