starter labors sometimes like a low battery sometimes starts no problem,now its whirring had to disconnect battery to stop it when i touch pos wire to batt it starts whirring again, new battery and solanoid just had engine rebuilt last fall (top end)1500 mi. ago.has been fine, problem started slowly but kept getting worse now bad its an 82 shovelhead fxe customized

One possibility is that the wiring to the starter button on the handlebars is damaged, or the switch itself is faulty, so it is staying permanently on (as if you are holding the button down). Check inside the handlebar switch console for damaged wires, or wires touching each other.

that sw is low power but a possibility
sounds like a stuck solenoid, high current and are prone to failure, nature of the beast. just remove wire off it from start button and turn power on, starter still goes to town, found your issue.

Charge the battery and have it load tested.
A weak battery can be the cause of starter run on.

You need to determine if the battery is good before you attempt troubleshooting the starter system.

I have the hole right side disconnected and the power is still there
