Alright so heres my back story, I just finished up restoring, "First Mistakes" my 77 Superglide FXE. Back story my grandma bought this bike new, I got it as a rusty *** frame with half the motor gone. I've got the motor redone running like a top, all the metal painted fresh. My only problem is the wiring harness that was on it wasn't great so I gutted it and got a builders harness from VTWIN. Well I scrapped all the old wiring and did it by the book. That harness melted when I was working on it without the battery undone, hence the name First Mistakes, lol. I just put not my second harness but third harness in it. I Have a manual for from AMF, and every wire is in the correct home. An old harley guy made it clear to me that some of those manuals were right, but my problem lies somewhere within my lighting circuit. When I depress the brake the lights dim out and my lighting circuit breaker pops. I can not figure out where my short is! I took the wires off the brake switch and touched them together and it still shorts so that eliminates my switches. I'm not really sure where to go from here when I just put in a new harness so I know my wires shouldn't be shorted to ground. Anyone on here know anything about a spot I can check maybe the diagram is screwed up and I need to switch some pins around in the headlight bucket?? Any tips at this point would be helpful.

very hard to say
looks like you need to snake every wire til you find it. you could use a vom or a test light.
china stuff is always top notch.

Actually I found the culprit, hot wire at the connection box deal, rubbed through the plastic and was grounding out on the coil mount, I put some electrical tape over it and it rubbed through again, will have to figure out another thicker solution...

Thumbs up

Well done! Nothing sweeter than diagnosing a problem yourself.

I didn't like that setup on my 72 FX while building it. Bought 2 - 5/16 coupling nuts which spaced the coil about 3/8" away from the terminal board. Eliminated any chance of coil bracket to wire connector contact.
