Default wiring fun :/

ok so since i have my generator off because it was sick, i decided to pull off the gas tank and seat to expose the wiring harness just to see. i mean it's only 4 bolts so why not? i only found one patched together wire which was not being used. everything seemed ok until i noticed that the red rear brake light wire coming from the front switch (hand lever) to the light is disconnected. ok try to connect it with the rear switch and ... nothing.
so i pull the headlight and what do i find? aaah! the wiring up there was re-done by a rat or something. i swear there are knots. so today i'm going to do some cutting and organizing and see if i can't get this mess straightened out and get a few things working, like brake light when i just use the hand brake and the turn signals would be nice. dude tried to add some after market signals and they look nice but no worky. i think the orange wire coming from the back of the bike is not even connected to the turn signals but it's hard to be sure because of the tangled mess i've got in there. wish me luck!

i love wiring :/

Not as bad as it looks, but someone was not electrically inclined. on my bike someone had superstreght, all the bolts sho it.

what ever you do, HAVE A FACTORY DIAGRAM for your year model.

Be sure to use good wire connectors, and a good crimper! Had The bike fail to start in a parking lot on a 300 mile poker run. took the head light out and one of the wires fell out of the crimped lug. 5 min. later we were running again, but it was a little pride hurt since I did all the wiring myself. And scotch locks are for home use!

Please put the year of your bike into your profile. Then it will show at the top right of each of your posts.

I see no circuit breakers! This is deadly - there have been two or three posts in recent years about bikes burning up litterally from this. You need one 30 amp breaker and either two or three 15 amp breakers. Check the wire diagrams in your factory service manual. The Haynes has good color diagrams if your bike is 1978 or older.

All orange wires on the bike are 12 volts with the ignition key switch on. You need to follow the wire diagram to sort these out. They are not too complex.

Do not cut any wires that are in the headlite bucket. They all look correct except possibly the ones that have been messed up by the PO.

Here is under the seat of my '78 ...

You need to have the factory service manual and a good color wire diagram in hand for this work.

nice and tidy nick. looks good. the breakers are there, sorry for the blurry pic. i have 'em all pulled out hanging free. flashers are a continuity circuit correct? so if the front flashers are not grounded then they won't work? i'm a bit puzzled because i did a whole bunch of untangling and there is no change :/ everything is the same and i did a bunch of elimination behind the headlight. i have no indicator lights to hook up and no horn so i'm wondering if leaving those out is leaving any circuits incomplete? frustrated but at least i haven't lost anything. and i got to weld a tab onto my frame to hold the oil tank where it was held on with a clamp before and welded the rear brake switch to the frame as well so no more lame clamps holding stuff on.

you guys can't see what year my ride is? hmmm... that's weird i can see it on my end.

and i do have a haynes manual to help out with the wiring. so i'm not running completely blind, but i have heard of haynes getting stuff wrong.

it shows up for me....a 77 xclh....and im thinking maybe a bobber???? lol
your wires look beautiful compared to what mine did wheni got mine.taking the battery out/in i would LITERALLY pick up a ball of wires to be able to make room for the battery.there was one length of wire that was 5 different colors and various different guages...just all wired togethre to get to point a to point b.-------i rewired it but plan on doing it againand going through the backbone.
as far connectors go i really dont like them if i am going to splice somthing.i would prefer to separate the wires into two sections per end and then twist those two with the other end.have a piece of shrink tube stuff to slide over and somtimes if there is room i tape it first to keep a wire from poking out like it does sometime.i always get rid of that hard piece of plastic that comes with the connectors.its crap imo.
also i would add a 20 amp inline fuse near the volt.reg in case you develop a short between there and the batt.

right on i still haven't got a chance to ground the front flashers to see if they will work if i do that. that is the only thing i can think of other than the controls being jacked up.
