Default Relay

I am considering installing a pair of driving lights on my '99 Sportster 883. I have found some wire harnes kits that include a relay. Is a relay necessary and what does it do?

the relay takes the load of the lights off the switch, a fuse at the source is very important

as mentioned above...the switch will not heat-up and melt.
