Default Polishing/Porting heads

Greetings,

Trying to understand what gains can be had with polishing / porting heads.

Currently running a Stage 1 (SE AC, V&H ProPipe & V&H FP3) and will be getting one of the following cams in a couple of weeks for a winter project (Andrews 57H, Woods 555 or S&S MR103...probably the 57H), along with lifters and what not.

I see companies like Fuel Moto offering head exchanges and am wondering...

1. Is it very involved to change out the heads? I'm planning on doing the cam install myself. Any tips on the change out?
2. What gains could I expect from having the heads done?
3. Anyone know of a trustworthy local source in northeast NJ that does this work? Not the install, but the actual porting/polishing.
4. Are there more ideal cam choices than what I listed, when combined with the flowed heads?
5. How is mileage affected by this change?

Edited to add: Bike is a 2013 FLD

Thanks!

Fuel Moto .... Hillside ... Prodrag all on this site. They offer proven packages. There's a WHOLE lot more to consider too.

Yup, understand those companies offer the head service.

Could you be more descriptive as to what would include a WHOLE lot more to consider?

It would help to know the model and year of the bike.

You can expect about a 10TQ/10HP gain from porting. As Larry advised, there are two forum sponsors that offer head porting services in various configurations starting with a basic "street" port and working up from there in scope and price. You should contact Scott/Hillside and Kirby/VeeTwin Performance and anyone of a number of reputable porters in different parts of the country; chat them up and decide who you want to work with. Scott and Kirby are forum sponsors but also skilled machinist and builders and trustworthy; both will work with a customer on an exchange basis to minimize down time. Select a porter before purchasing the cams as the heads need to be set up for the cams selected. Both shops have historical data on how their heads work with various configurations and can advise what they believe to be the best configuration to meet your performance goals. Which means, you need to be clear about your expectations and be able to clearly communicate them to the porter.

You can expect your mileage to drop but not so much from the modifications but your throttle play will increase.

Well said djl.....

However If your gonna use the 57 cam then plan on increasing the compression as well. Later closing intake requires a little more comp at 46*. It really comes alive at 10.5:1.

Fuel moto has several dyno sheets on their website. There you can see the difference between a cam in a stock motor and one with ported heads.

Hillside is in Munnsville, NY, pretty close to you. Scott is very easy to talk with about this stuff. He won't try to sell you anything you don't want.
