am I screwed ?
[QUOTE=scxbmwredd;16974619]Will some one explain why the oil pump pinion would have anything to do with compression loss ? If anyone has a diagram of what the internals of the engine are , I'd like to see it .
Gearhead 88 , have you experienced a oil pump failure ? Is this a common thing on Harley's Sportsters ?
if the key sheared, the pinion shaft would stop turning the cams, thus valves would be hung open & make contact with the piston & bend.really nothing to do with the oil pump (even though that would stop too,if the shared keyway broke all the way) a HD motor can run for quite a while without pressure before any real damage will occur as long as oil is being splashed around.im sure you stuck a valve from the oil being too thick.starting ANY motor in 17* isn't a real good idea

Hokay , I did some Y T searching and have discovered the WEAKNESS of the Evo style Sporty engines and its the cheap *** under engineered oil pump worm gear and its driven oil pump shaft . Well Harley had me fooled into believing they could build a good engine!
Anyone have a holder tool for when I take the gear off ?
Failures at between 15 an 35 K !!!.
So its pull 'er down time . I was going to enlarge the engine to 1200 cc any ways .So next topic is :
Who's pistons to buy and what compression ratio ? I ain't building a racer .
and
Buy the whole jug assy or bore my jugs out
Remember, its a 2005 model .

contact hammer on the xlforum, they offer what you need and stand behind their service.
when you go back, opt for the bronze drive gear and apply more torque on the nut, acceptable solution to help clamp the assy, even arron with hammer performance will give you the skinny on that.

Thanks for asking . I am 60 yo and have been wrenching since 14 yo and have extensive Jap knowledge and BMW Factory BMW certified and A M I graduate ( big deal !) , USAF former jet engine mechanic and currently semi retired doing service work on college kids' mopeds from Clemson U ( go Tigers !).
Only been dealing with HD Sporty's : belt changes , carb cleans , tires , wheel bearings.
Yeh I heard Hammer is good source
How 'bout those pistons comp ratio ? Ok to bore to 1200 cc on 883 jugs ?
The only 'Hop up' I see real value in is dual plug - works great on Air head BMW's .You have advice on Sporty dual plugging ?

The reason I ask is because I don't know anybody that would only allow their bike to warm up 3 minutes in 17 degree weather to take it out on the road that's not a smart move so yeah you can do damage and that's why I asked because lot of novices, well I don't think they would just plain old know that. Even in 45 degree weather I'm letting my bike run at least 10 minutes minimum before I take it out on the road.
