Thoughts on a 98" Big Bore build with 585 Cams?
#21
if looking for a hit at lower RPM`s,look at the S&S .583,set at 9.8-1,it will make good power from 1700-4500,the 570 is a great all around cam set at 10.25-1 from 2200-5000+,& the 585 is a good, more hot rod type grind, set at 10.5-1,your looking at 3000-6500+,we use a lot of all 3 cams, but that said, all require different porting to work properly, make sure your porter knows that

S&S 583: Optimized for use in the Softail®/Dyna® lines, this cam makes horsepower and torque that you can feel all the way through the rpm range, making the most power right where you need it: 1500–5000rpm. Bolt-in.
Woods TW-6: Bolt in Street/Touring. Very strong from idle through 5500 RPM. Light or heavy bike.
Andrews TW26a: Bolt-in cam 88–95 inches and stock compression ratio. Great for two-up touring, this cam will add torque and HP at lower and middle RPM ranges. (1800–5200 RPM).

Consider expanding the list to include TMan 555 Torkster and two Cycle Rama cams; 570 or 575, depending on the goal. Of course, with the varying intake close events, head chamber volume has to be taken into consideration. The 583 has a very early intake close and most of the others close around 35*. The Cycle Rama cams are putting up some very strong numbers and worth a look.

A great cam in a touring-type 98" is the Andrews 57. (and yes, it is available, for early chains)
Larger lift version of the famed 37, but with tweaked exhaust timing.
Comes on real quick, and runs the hp right up also.
We use it often, and commonly see 110-112 ft/lbs, over a broad rpm band.
6H will spank it, but w/o a geardrive version,(ie more money also) it'll have some noises.
Many opinions, but^^^^^^^^these are facts.

Thats great to hear.... I love those numbers. What RPM range does the cam kick in at? Im not a phsyco rider, but I do like to jump on it once in a while, so the useable RPM range for the way I usually ride would be roughly 1800-4500, give or take. Just wondering if I selected the wrong cam to get that range.

Got 585s in a 95 ,11:1, super g carb, intake, played with heads, ported w bigger intakes from previous owner,ign/timing control box,in a striped down dyna.165-170lbs Doesn't like to be lugged. Starts to pull at 3gs, then shows it' worth at 4gs to the limiter. Freeway it'a happiest at about 3500-4000. But Will settle for 3000 and be ready to crank up.. 2800 and under need to be mindful of roll on and ping. Can finesse it along in the lower rpm going threw town etc, just more clutch and shifting.
Two ups manageable,no big girls.. just more mindful on the roll on/ping overall. And ignoring the squeaky
Voice that may be saying something like slow down,I almost fell off,
. Yes you picked the wrong cam for your intent, unless you want to snow ball the living crap out of it and stroke and bore to a 124 haha.
I know it's tempting to save a few bucks piecing a build together, but youre really better off buying a kit from one of the builders. So they can set deck height, quench and port the heads to the builds actuall needs ,& compression releases if need be, all in one shot.

Didn' say it was never bratty about gas and having to play with timing at times , just flat out control the right hand over crappie gas or if she lied about her weight.
I use to run the bike with a .45 hg @10.6,brought it down to a .30hg @10.99 and it has less tendency to ping now,Talking slight ping not glass crunching rattles if I get lazy on dropping a gear.
