So I am in the process of changing out my stock rocker boxes, rocker covers, and push-rod tappet covers on my 2015 Softail Slim. I have decided that it cosmetically necessary to have gloss black boxes, covers, and tappet covers ;-P Anyways, I have taken apart the rear cylinder area since I only wanted to focus on one at a time. It was a great experience thus far, and everything went soundly! I am referencing my service manual for the reassemble procedures that are ahead, and I had some technique questions:
When installing the rocker housing onto the cylinder head (6 bolts), it is mentioned to use blue-type thread locker. That makes sense. When I first removed all 6 bolts that secured the rocker box (during disassembly), they were well coated in engine oil...seems natural give the location of extraction. Logic would also assume that since the rocker housing bolts were oil saturated, that the bolt holes have oil in them as well. Would this be correct logic? With all that being said, I am assuming that the oil that might be in the bolt holes needs to get cleaning out, prior to putting clean bolts back in with threadlocker on them. Is that correct? What would be the best technique to ensure the threaded holes that are to take the rocker-housing bolts are clean enough for threadlocker?
I was thinking of getting long cotten swabs. The ones that have the wooden stick.
Yup qtips work great or compressed air but get your face out of the line of fire. Make sure you follow the pushrod replacement procedure very closely
Thanks a lot!! So here's another question, after i got to thinking about it. I separated the pushrods so i would know which was exhaust and intake. Is there going to be an issue if i didn't reference which was the top and bottom placement of those push rods? I didn't think to do that at the time, and just placed them in ziplock bags.
Those cans of compressed air for blowing out computer keyboards work great for getting the oil out of the holes
