Souda Bay Crete
Hello all! This is a story from a long time ago. But it includes biking so here goes. My first tour in the Navy was between 81-84. I was stationed in Sigonella Sicily and was Aircrew with VR24. I was a loadmaster and we took mail, passengers, and cargo out to the aircraft carriers and trapped on the ships and after off loading and reloading, we catapulted off. Dangerous job but was fun also. I got to visit just about every NATO country over there and really enjoyed it.
One deployment to Crete we were there flying ops for a few weeks and we had a day off and decided to go to town and rent bikes. These were like Kawasaki 400 or something I can't remember right now. They were small bikes. We toured all over the island that day. Stopping at some places to refuel and eat. We got to see part of that Island not many americans got to see. It was like going back into time of like around mid 1800's Old women carrying big sacks of almonds to the market. Sheep crossing and traveling down the roads. Ended with eating at the Fish House down by the bay. You could get a 1 kilo lobster tail for about $12 Good times.
