Why 1993 and up on exhaust options?
I been looking around for a new exhaust system. I have a 1992 FXDC. A lot of the fitment charts list 1993-XXXX and have no options for older Dyna models. I know about the intake breather bolt changes but what is the difference between the exhaust system for these two years? Would a 93' system work with some small changes? I just gots to know.

Well, I have a complete OEM 2007 twinky exhaust system on my 1986 FLHT. Fit perfect, every last clamp. I only added plugs for the oxygen sensor bungs. There was probably a change in how the pipes fit together somewhere along 93. Were there any frame changes along then? I'm not familiar with the FX's.

The twin cam and the evo have the same dimensions between the ports on the heads so an exhaust system for the twin will fit an evo. Where you run into the problem is the mounting of a new style exhaust to the older frames. I plan on using a set of V&H Big Radius pipes on my 87, and will have to make a custom bracket to mount it up.
Almost any newer exhaust will fit the older evo bikes you just have to make some custom adjustments, with consideration for fwd controls, mid controls etc...

Found some used on ebay so I bought them and this is what I found out;
When I tried to mount them right side went on perfect, left side didn't have the 2 threaded holes required to bolt on the mounting bracket. Looked at my wifes 01 Fatboy and it had the holes in the frame on the left side covered by 2 plastic plugs, why didn't mine?
Here's my theory, 1995 was the first year for the springer softail which came with duals. I'm sure HD didn't have differnt softail frames for just the springer so they made the holes and just plugged them when it wasn't a springer. That's why everything said 95 & up.
I had to drill & tap the left side in order to mount the bracket, 3,000 miles later no problems.
Hope that helps

As others have said, it is all down to the way the mufflers fit onto your pipes. If you still have the original pipes on, they have a flared end and use a funny clamp. Only early mufflers will fit. But you can fit later pipes, as I have done on my 1990 FLHS, and the later mufflers will fit. You can then fit a wide variety of mufflers.
If you bought your bike secondhand, it is possible it already has a replacement set of pipes. Check the muffler clamps. If in doubt call by your local dealer.

Frankly, I know of no difference between the '91, '92 and '93 Dyna frames. And the only difference I know of after that, until the new frame in 2006, is the tubing below the seat was replaced with sheetmetal (to lower the seat a little). Perhaps it's only because there were so few Dyna models before '93 (only your Custom, plus the limited editon Sturgis and Daytona) that the designations is limited to 1993 or later.
