Default Exhaust Question??

I have a 1988 Ultra that I'm wanting to upgrade the exhaust on. I'm having a heck of a time finding exhaust that will fit. Everything seems to be for '95 and newer.

What is the difference in what exhaust will fit my bike and say '95 and up?

Any EVO bagger exhaust is interchangeable. Until '95 they used a flange joint on the muffler and head pipes. You can cut off the flange off the head pipes and use late model slip-ons or replace it all. Use the search and you'll find many threads on it.

Are you looking just for mufflers or a complete system?

Just the mufflers. The rest is in good shape.

Where are you looking? I just bought new cans for my '90, and found quite a few. Ended up with Paughcos that bolted right up.

I got them from J&P.

I haven't looked there yet. How do you like the Paughcos?

To soon to say really. Just got then on this morning. Too icy here for a test ride, so can't speak to performance.

They do look first rate, with a great chrome job and smooth welds.

If you still have the original pipes with flared tips, where the mufflers attach, then simply pension them off and buy yourself a secondhand later system. It will bolt right on and allow you to use all those later mufflers. On my 1990 Glide, which came new with the same system as your bike, I now have a 2008 aftermarket system. These things are that interchangeable! Some '07 sets of pipes and all '08 pipes have O2 sensors, but the rest come without.

,,and the crossover pipe on the rear cylinder is built much better and less prone to crack.

no way I would invest in old flange style exhaust when you could update it and have endless muffler choices, for very little coin.

example of barely used for roughly 40 bucks

Be aware that '08 & '09 mufflers as the right side has a cat in them, you can look in it and see it, if you end up with one, you can knock it out, but it's a PIA.
