Excessive vibration on a Dyna Wide Glide
I don't have a tach, but guess the vibes are coming on strong at around 1800. They don't smooth out till I'm on the top have off the rpm range in each gear. 4th gear & 40-45mph is awful, and so is 5th gear under about 65mph. It's also really bad on deceleration.
I put in a new front mount. My Indy put in a new rear, and let the engine settle within the mounts. The mounts showed little wear, and this didn't fix the problem. He also checked alignment, he said. I've also checked the exhaust for touching anything. The crossover connect between the two pipes was a little loose, but securing that didn't change anything.
The belt tension and chain were also checked by the Indy. Checking with another Indy, he rode it and said it's just a Dyna. They do that. He also mentioned checking the fly wheels, but that it's a very costly job to balance them if they are out, and that I might as well get a Honda instead of balancing the fly wheels.....he was only partially kidding.
Both of these Indy guys say that carb lean/rich condition couldn't cause a noticeable vibration, so I haven't really explored that area.
This is my 2nd Dyna Evo, the other being a '97. It didn't have these symptoms at 55Kmi when I sold it. This one only has 12K and it's a 98. The vibes are mostly felt in my seat, but also in the bars and pegs.
Please give me some ideas of things to check. Thank you.

I see you said you changed the front and rear mounts i guess your talking the bottom motor mounts i'd pull the tanks and take a very close look at the top rocker motor mount i've had one crack and you'll have bad vibration all over. if it is bad make sure the new one is a heavy duty one you'll see the diff. also like the last post said a tight drive belt or a tight primary chain can cause it.

Is this bike new to you?? I put a BLD primary drive in mine and the vibe's are pretty wicked if I'm anywhere near lugging it. 5th at 60mph is not a freindly spot.. The compensator will absorb the normal engine vibrations. The indy that said "its a dyna, they all do it" should be avoided.. I'll reserve comment.. But, they are pretty smooth by nature..

I bought this bike last year with 6,000 miles on it, now 12K. I don't recall any bad vibes initially. It seems to have been gradually coming on. It's hard to remember exactly.
The chain and belt are both adjusted just fine. If anything, they may be on the loose side. Plus the vibes seem to engine speed related. I haven't checked the top mount yet, but my Indy said it was tight... I'll still pull the tank and see.
The only thing not stock mechanically speaking are mufflers and Thunderslide (composite slide) jet kit installed by original owner's mechanic. I had a different Indy Dyno tune it, but because he's a young guy that doesn't know carbs, he was not successful (in my opinion) because he mixed in the incorrect jets. He messed it all up, only tuning for max tq and hp, not ride-ability. So I put it back close to where it was and it runs pretty good. Plugs look okay. mpg's in the low 40's. I mention this wondering if the issue could be carb related; but I have been told "no" by two Indys. They also said if there were an engine issue, it would be making some different/unusual noises.
I took it to mechanic/Harley drag racer in the area and he said it is likely the fly wheels are not as balanced as I would like, and that each bike may be a little different that way. He offered to have it checked, but if that's the issue, it's a major expense and commitment to fix/change it.
I wish I could find an EVO specialist in Houston to check it out...

For what it's worth, my 96" evo has vibrated significantly at 50-55 mph in 5th, since the major upgrade of installing the S&S 96" Hot Setup kit. A couple of professionals told me it was normal, considering the mods. I recently got a long-time carb issue resolved (leaking fuel around the accelerator pump nozzle), and was able to get the intermediate circuit properly leaned, and adjusted the valves at the same time. It is much smoother now.
