Default Cv carb conversion question

Replacing my Keihin carb from my 89 flhtc to a newer cv. I know u need the adapter but what else? Will the stock air cleaner mount up and will the stock cables work? I see some posts about a throttle kit? What cables if needed do I need? Or is it easier to just get a s&s or mikuni kit

I changed the carb on my 1985 FLHTC to a HD CV carb may years ago. I believe you need a different intake manifold, also the cables are different and the air cleaner mount is different as well. I had to remove my old ham can air cleaner and use one from a newer model with CV Carb.

I did that conversion on my 1988. I didn't leave it that way for long. I went with an S&S Super E and have been very happy with it. The CV will require the proper intake manifold. I wrestled with an intake leak that drove me crazy till I went to the S&S. Not suggesting that you do this but, if I were to go back to the CV I would put a thin coat of red RTV on the heads where the manifold mounts, let it get nearly dry, then mount the manifold. If I had figured that out before I might still be riding on the CV. The S&S solved all the issues. The stock rubber O-rings on the CV manifold suck. I used brand new O-rings and in a year they were dry rotted and totally worthless. The S&S manifold has a sort of triangle shaped O-ring that gets pressed down on the manifold when you tighten it down. Good design.

You can modify the cables to work on the CV or the S&S. Just cut some rubber cover off and peel back the wire wrapper to the desired length. You'll need to get creative when you route the fuel line and choke cable as it's different from the butterfly. All in all, the S&S just went on much easier.

That's odd. The H-D "O-rings" I've used all have had a triangular cross section. The set in my bike have been there for 13 years and 100,000 miles.

1989 FLHS here.
When I replaced my stock carb and manifold with a CV style I needed a new idle cable, a throttle cable, and I ended up having to replace the entire Choke assembly and cable as well.

Good time to put a free breathing intake on as well.
