I'm going with bad coil myself.
From what you said in your first post that is what I would change first.

Instead of just buying a cheap one get an OEM coil.

Good point. I was swapping plug ends instead of coil ends. Makes a difference.

He has a softail.
What that means is that the plug wires cannot be swapped.
The one for the rear jug is far too short to reach the front jug.

Well, not surprisingly, no one keeps ignition coils in stock. Have to wait for a week for one to arrive.

Meanwhile I just cured my 'dreaded click' with the starter.
As in the sticky......fused wire from the + battery to terminal 30 of the relay. Works a treat now.
Any suggestions as to what size fuse I should be using?

Not necessary on an early softail according to the sticky..........

''However on 1989-1993 FLHS, 87-94 FXLR, 86-94 FXR, 86-92 FXRS/con/sp, 95-98 FLHR, FLHR-I, 1999 FXR2 and FXR3 and older Soft Tail and WideGlide models, You could just hook up a heavier gauge, fused wire from battery positive directly to the original starter relay's "30" tab. When you connect the new wire, disconnect the original wire from the "30"tab and tape it off. You don't need to worry about the additional relay.''

So I didn't.......works fine now.

Been a while since I read that sticky, might do that.
I didn't realize you bought that coil on a cloudy day, no wonder it failed
