Default starter pinion gear stuck

All of a sudden the pinion gear on my starter is getting "hung" on the ring gear of the clutch basket when I attempt to start the old gal. The starter then goes on a free spin without starting bike. Is this misalignment? Can someone tell me what is going on and how to fix it? I am attempting to re-align the starter now but would appreciate any informed opinions or suggestions.

If the starter pinion gear is getting "hung" and engaging the ring gear of the clutch basket, I would guess the starter clutch is bad depending on what year you have

Default 98 fxdl

I just read a previous these which said check clutch basket bearing. Considering previous problems I bet that is issue I will check tonight.

How's the teeth on the ring gear look? If they are torn up the pinion gear might be hanging up there....

Teeth on ring-gear all appear in good condition. The pinion gear is hanging up between inner primary housing and the ring gear outside of its normal resting place. I will take a picture tomorrow.
