If you change the front end you may not be able to "fix" that speedometer accuracy.

The pick-up unit at the front wheel is also part of the front wheel spacer system. I don't think you can change the gear ratio without changing the spacer, so you would get the ratio that comes with the appropriate spacer.

May need to change the speedometer to match the wheel unit/spacer.

Stock speedo on a '96 Softail would have been an electronic speedo driven off a magnetic pickup on the transmission. If you have a cable operated unit, it's not stock, and there's no telling what you actually have from here.

Yeah this makes sense. Since I want to change to a different sized front wheel I figure this is a good time to try and figure out exactly what I have going on. Is there something on the speedometer itself that I need to match up to the drive?

The bike has had a ton of custom work done to it. Like I was saying earlier it has dual disc front brakes and to do that the lowers had to be changed out so I guess they decided to use front wheel drive for the speedo when they did that. My guess so far is my lowers are off a wide glide, really would like to figure it out so I know what I have.

Did the '96 Softails come with LED odometer? This was when they changed it to coming off the transmission.

That is an aftermarket speedometer, if you look on the back it should have the ratio on it...1:1 2:1 2240:60
