All of a sudden I have oil coming down the back of the inner primary on my '93 FLSTC. I know it's not trans fluid because it isn't red. It's fairly clean looking so I'm making the assumption that it isn't motor oil either. That leaves only chain case oil.

The primary is isolated on my model so I'm assuming that there would be a vent. I can't find mention of a vent in the manual so would anybody know where that would be located so I can see if it's plugged causing pressure and leakage past the oil seal? If the vent is clear then the oil seal must be bad but I don't want to pull the primary if I don't have to.

Almost right..the shift arm seal is on the transmission not the primary.
Actually there are 5 places on the back of the inner primary that can leak.
1) Primary to motor O ring
2) Inner primary bearing seal
3) Starter jack shaft seal
4&5) the holes for the bolts that hold the primary adjusting plate.. you just need some good RTV for those.

 

The primary and transmission share a common vent. the primary vents to the transmission through the hollow mainshaft alongside the clutch pushrod. The transmission vent is a rubber hose between the transmission and the inner primary, just above and behind the shift lever.

 

Okay I was wrong, but I figured someone would chime in and set me straight.

 

My 1st thought was tranny vent hose.

 

Looks like an inverted J.

 

I knew there had to be some kind of a vent somewhere. So, the primary vents into the the trans and the trans vets back into the primary? That's funky. What happens if one of those vent ways gets compromised? neither gets vented?

Right, didn't count the shifter seal because it wasn't on the primary.

1. No oil up in that area
2.&3. Most of the oil is located under those areas.
4&5. Never though about those. Thanks.
