1990 Fat Boy, BUY/SELL???

drjmba 12-12-2018 06:09 AM

I own this 1990 Fat Boy...I have been offered $10,000 for it....

I recently purchased it from an elderly gentleman who took exceptional car of the bike

My plan had always been to keep the Gray Ghost and return her to 100% original.. the bike has 4,000 miles and is in amazing condition ....

NOTE: ( I do have all NOS parts to complete the bike...(exhaust, seat, air cleaner, etc...)

I am not sure if I should accept offer in order to purchase a 2003 Screamin Eagle Road Glide that I’ve had my eye on...or hold on the the Gray Ghost

Thoughts or suggestions?

0maha 12-12-2018 06:29 AM

Sell an iconic model so you can get a 2003 TwinCam RoadGlide (which is a dime a dozen)?

NFW.

drjmba 12-12-2018 06:33 AM

Agreed...this 1990 Fat Boy is an incredible bike!!!

I ride it an an enjoy it very much...this model comes up on every list of collectible/iconic/best HDs of all time...

I am sure I would definitely regret letting it go....

grbrown 12-12-2018 08:37 AM

What did you promise the chap you bought it from?!

touchdown 12-12-2018 08:48 AM

Take the 10k and run bike is only worth about 5K

drjmba 12-12-2018 08:54 AM

No specific promises to any one... However, I do hear what you are saying!!! I know where you are going with this.

The sale of certain bikes is often predicted by an unwritten agreement between the buyer & seller . (ie, don’t chop it up, not buying it just to sell, etc...).

I always try to be respectful when I purchase a bike based upon a rapport or understanding with the other party. Bikes are often extensions of people’s personalities so disrespecting a deal is disrespectful to the previous owner.

Cool... sell me yours please.

drjmba 12-12-2018 08:55 AM

I am not sure you know what you are talking about...these bikes sell for way more than $5000...

touchdown 12-12-2018 09:10 AM

Buy and sell all of the time, just saying always someone willing to over pay.

Those bikes have some collectabilty...but are not highly sought after like a pan or knuck...

NADA for very good condition is $6440 ...you would need to get special insurance(agreed value), or you would get screwed if it was totaled or stolen...

No Harley newer than a gennie shovel is selling for what they used to...since "the crash"

Prot 12-13-2018 05:15 AM

It ain't the 90's anymore where used bikes were selling for obscene amounts of money.

Most Evo's are going for between $3,500 and $5,500.

Springers fetch a couple of thousand more than whatever a standard model of the same bike sells for. Same goes for CVO's (called Screamin Eagle at the time).

In other words, it's a very cool bike but sell it for ten grand to whoever wants to pay that much for it and buy yourself a gently used Evo for $4,000.

I called my insurance company, Progressive, 2 days ago and asked about rates for bikes tagged as "historic", since that is what I just changed my 1985 FXWG to.
They don't offer special rates for "historic" tagged bikes, but it did come up in the conversation that they don't have guidelines for valuing older bikes, so they used agreed value. I don't recall doing anything special to come up with an agreed value, other than maybe me telling them what I wanted it valued at. They reminded me that my 85 FXWG, and my 76 FLH, each have an agreed value of $8k.
I only mention this because I don't feel like I have "special" insurance, in fact it's the very same policy that covers my 2011 FLHX and my 2005 AIH LSC. Not sure how other insurance companies work with older bikes.

98hotrodfatboy 12-13-2018 05:55 AM

The only way I know that you can prove value over NADA is with receipts of upgrades.... Got that straight from my Carrier...

pjb 12-13-2018 06:01 AM

With Progressive, I did no such thing, and we have an agreed value.

drjmba 12-13-2018 07:13 AM

Update ... I will be selling the Gray Ghost for $12,000. Appreciate the feedback gang , but I think you have to accept the fact that certain bikes are collectible and valuable...

pjb 12-13-2018 07:19 AM

you found that one buyer that really wanted it, and he'll probably be very happy with it.
I wouldn't go as far as to say that is the new value of that type of bike, but you did good.

drjmba 12-13-2018 07:54 AM

I have had 5 (FIVE) offers for the bike...lowest was $8500....best so far was $12000.

0maha 12-13-2018 08:22 AM

Unless you're selling it to fund your mother's surgery, I still think you're nuts.

drjmba 12-13-2018 08:58 AM

I’m keeping it...love the bike too much. Not for sale...

pjb 12-13-2018 09:46 AM

So, without an actual sale it's all just talk, which even clearer shows it does nothing to establish value.

Good choice to keep it though.

Prot 12-13-2018 09:46 AM

For $12,000 you could buy two Evo's and have some money leftover for repairs and upgrades.

I'm not one to sell shit, but I would have sold it without hesitation for twelve thousand dollars.

Then why bother posting all the blah blah blah....

pjb 12-13-2018 10:16 AM

33 posts and the vast majority of them in various threads about the value of bikes.........

0maha 12-13-2018 10:19 AM

The OP is not being straight. He's got the bike for sale on CycleTrader, and it's obvious now that the whole point of this thread was to try to generate interest in the bike.

I just called "agreed value" insurance special because if you don't ask for it...you won't get it...

It cost more money than if you just called up and said" I want insurance for my 85 FXWG"...and if it was totaled or stolen...they would have been cutting you a check for $2500 or so

Good luck like I said before there is a sucker born every day

drjmba 12-13-2018 02:39 PM

I’m surprised my question generated this much discussion...bike is definitely worth keeping, no doubts about it! (I don’t care what anyone pays for insurance ).

drjmba 12-13-2018 02:41 PM

I just raised the price on cycletrader....check it out...

One of the things I like about the Evo section is the light hand of the mods, allowing us to drift a bit here and there.

But this thread is bullshit and should be moved to the For Sale section.

Schex 12-13-2018 04:43 PM

I really like that Fatboy, but I think I like the 12k more,

. I totally agree in this guy is b*******. They chucked one of my threads in the shovel head section. I was just telling the guys to say goodbye to my shovel and he said no it's a for sale thread and he got rid of it. It was the moderator Izzie Qauzzo....

Was it the same Nigerian prince that offered to buy my bike ? He's very busy and won't be able to pick it up in person so he'll make arrangements for you to ship it to him. You're very lucky to have him as a buyer, he'll even pay you for your time.

panz4ever 12-15-2018 08:37 AM

Hey mods how about moving this to the 4 Sale section. Guy just posted here to gin up the sale of the bike. He even admits it.

drjmba 06-30-2019 10:28 AM
