"New" ain't always "good" carry a spare and the "tested" one will Not Fail....

 

Morning, Racepres. Bet a fuel pump replacement would be a bitch on the road.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

 

I know nothing of it... But.. I believe I would learn it... But, I can still do a rear Wheel R&R on the Road...so... I suspect a Pump can't be all That...
But again... No Effin Idea... May be like the Wif's car... no need for even a hood latch...except to stand there with the hood open looking Dumbfounded!!!!

 

You wouldn't want to do a fuel pump replacement on the side of the road. Hoses need replaced with R-10 submersible neoprene because the oem plastic is brittle. Clamps are single use. The tank dash has to come off. You can do it in a garage while on the road but you'll need a NAPA parts store nearby. (The other guys don't sell R-10 usually.)

Could be the amount of gas in the tank, has the fuel level changed in the 4 starts. Do you start the bike upright or on the kick stand? Fuel filter is quite possible, has it ever been changed? Be sure to replace the intank hoses while changing filter. I always split the old hoses or buy wire loom and zip tie it over the new hoses to protect them. Also remember the fuel cools an I tank pump, so to get the best life out of it, don’t run your tank lower then a quarter.

 

Alwats start level ( trike ). Do run down close to E, but never into reserve, 120-130 miles and I fill, premium only with 1 oz. Lucas top end and injector cleaner per fill.

Just back from 150m ride. At fillup, pump cycled with normal sound this time. And nope, would not want to do this repair on the side of the road. Hope to find a full kit with hoses....probably premium price for that one.

Full kit can be pieced together from Harley for hundreds of dollars. These are automotive use pumps that Harley chose to use on the Marrelli injection system. They can be had cheap on Ebay and the R-10 submersible neoprene hose only means that you go to Napa and get yourself 30" (it's pricey,) and some hose clamps. You'll be set at under $100 for the whole kit.

When my bike blew up last summer I went through the fuel tank and replaced the pump and filter while I was waiting on the engine to come back from Hillside. There was a lot of gummy goo in the crossover tube that I pulled out too. I put in a new cork gasket and sealing screws on the top of the tank and buttoned it all up. Total rebuild, no worries. You can do the same thing if you are worried about your pump, even if it's not necessary. I got one of those ebay pump kits on the cheap. It made a lot of sick noises when it was new, still does sometimes. My bike had 89k on it when the engine exploded so I felt like the tank repair was justified.

The repair would not be fun on the road. The torque for the sealing washers on top of the tank is very light. I bought a torque wrench just for it. Plus, you have to be able to drain your gas. If I was that worried, I would just do it.
