So thanks for the help definately helped me along.....turns out I had a bad head gasket in the back and my exhaust valve wasn't seating properly in the front along with 2 missing bolts on my rear rocker arms it's clear whoever had this bike before was a butcher......but I have one last problem....wen i start cold I get a horrible grinding sound so I pulled my primary cover off checked my ring gear and the is some wear on the teeth some burs and in some spots about sharp.....is there a measurement for the teeth or could I have play around my starter shaft?the starter is new.....could I have to much play around the starter shaft?thx for the help much appreciated
When you pulled the outer primary off, did you try starting and see how the starter pinion gear is locking up with the clutch starter ring? A grinding starter can be a system of a weak battery.

My preference is the 10-84 set up

Ok so I'll pick up a new battery just to eliminate that issue it is abit old.....and I will definately watch with the primary cover off.....is the replacement of the gear a big job?is the ring easy to get off and do I have to take the whole clutch apart to get at it?thx again

Next you grind off the tops of the rivets holding the OEM ring gear onto the clutch hub.
After that you take a punch and a hammer and drive out the rivets.
At that point you take off the damaged ring gear.
Now you drill out the holes the rivets were in going 1 size up on your drill bit.
Last you simply bolt the new ring gear to the clutch hub.
I `m not sure if thering gear can be replaced on that type clutch shell `mid `84 to `89 was oddball unit...I don`t remember any rivets on my old clutch (long gone)..

Ya I think ur right I don't think I can't replace it.....but on the plus side I tested the battery and underload it dropped down to nothing so im assuming and hoping that's the problem
Yeah your battery is definitely toast but you still have chewed up teeth on your ring gear.
