84 Tour Glide
Thinking of getting rid of my Twin Cam and getting into a 84 FLT. I have always loved the Tour Glide! This would be my first Evo, is there anything in particular I should be looking for?
Lifters are a 50K mile maintenance item. I think that 84 FLT might have the enclosed drive chain. They are said to be a PITA, but work well. Stock carb was a POS, but it's probably been replaced by now. Stock stator is a bit weak, but works.
Can't add much to that... I only got rid of my 1983 ( decidedly Not an Evo) because I got a touch older, and began feeling My Mileage... Luckily I am still good with FXR/SuperGlide/Sportster.... and, of course The Sidecar Rig!!!!!
Built a 82 FLT last winter, although it's a shovel still has the same foundation. 5 speed works as intended and understand a updated gear set will slide in the cases, rubber mounted engines, suspension could use some creature comfort, rear brakes are considered mountain brakes by the size and the big bastard can cruise down the roads. They are a love it or hate it bike to most people but if your into unique and could care less what people think, the FLT is a pure feel good machine.
When you're more focused on a specific '84 FLT, you'll get a better response. You might be one of those folks who gets lucky and finds a real "hidden Gem"...(literally...hidden). Old, garage queen,LOW mile EVO's keep popping up in essentially all-original condition. On older bikes like that, Mileage is much less important than condition and how far the bike might be/or not be from factory original.
In addition to the previous comments, I'll add the standard EVO stuff. Base gaskets were weak and at 37 years old you'll want to pay particular attention to EVERY part of the rubber mount system. The only generalized downside you will face buying a 37 yr old motorcycle is availability of parts and competent service work. Full disclosure: I'm an EVO fan. I ride an '85 that I bought new and keep it on the road because I haven't found another bike I would prefer to own. As far as the motor company, there are very few parts still available at a dealership. There are also a lot of dealerships that won't touch it when it needs more expertise than I can provide. Depending upon your level of mechanical expertise...you may want to identify a good local independent shop that's comfortable working on that bike.
Good luck ..!!!!

EVO base gasket leaks. May be true may not be. My EVO is 25 years old no base gasket leaks. I was told long ago on EVO's to let the bike warm up before beating on it. And the base gasket leak will not be an issue. It seems to have worked for me. Bike has never let me down.
it is not fast by most standards . But sure is fun to ride. Compared to newer bikes it is rather simple.
Good luck on you search .

If the one you find does Not have enclosed chain (some folks removed the enclosure) I would pass and go for a Belt Driven... Just Me
