I have a 96 wide glide i just purchased with a bad oil pan and was wondering what exactly separates the oil and transmission oil in there and can the pan be dropped down through the frame

While I have never removed mine, the manual says you can. You might need to use a cut down allen wrench to reach one or two of the bolts.

The engine oil is in the pan, the trans oil is kept above the oil pan in the trans. It just looks like half of the oil pan holds trans fluid and the other half looks like it holds engine oil because your looking at two drain plugs in the lower oil pan. The trans drain plug is actually only a passage from the upper trans to the bottom of the oil pan. See pic below, circled is the passage that runs thru the oil pan to drain the trans fluid.

Also take a look at the oil pan gasket and you can see the part that seals that passage on the gasket. I highly advise you try to find and use the foamette (soft metal core) style gasket when you put it all back together. Kind of hard to find and prices range greatly.

Thank You Yankee Dog but im having trouble finding a pan so im gonna throw some epoxy on it and hope for the best and atleast finish our season here in Ohio

Its split from the drain plug up about 1" - 1&1/2" guessing over size drain plug was the culprit
