porting and polishing?????
Does anyone know of any books or articles on how to port and polish a set of heads. Like what tools do I need etc.??
I hate paying someone else to workv on my bike so if there is a way I can do it myself that is the route zI will take everytime.
Thanks
Joe

By the time you buy the tools , do the job and take a chance on having less flow than you started with you would be better off performance -wise to send your heads to one of the shops that sponsor this site they can do an economy port, valve job ,cc the heads and news seals . for around $250.00 I believe. Then you will have a proven performer.
You coulddo a simple polishing job, which would clean up the ports, with a dremel tool and pads. Removing material to reshape the ports is best left to pros who have done the homework on a flow bench to maximize the effects. Improper shape, even if it looks good can really screw up flow.
If you are planning on polishing it yourself, don't touch the inlet ports. They need to have a texture in order to properly diffuse the gas and air as it comes into the head. I think you would be wwwaaaayyyy ahead of the curve if you take it to a professional. Out of the thousands of people that port and polish, there is probably only a handful that can do it correctly. It's more of an art than a skill.
I thought about doing it myself too until I looked into how it's done and read a bunch of stuff about it. I decided to just leave them alone orpony upthe dough if I dicide to do it, which is hard for me because I'm cheap and stubborn.

Reminds me of the time in the '60 that BLM decided to put the little 225 cu Buick engine in their Rover sedan. The used the Buick auto trans. The engineers decided to clean up the sloppy US trans, removing all the rough areas in the castings and polishing them up real good. The trans wouldn't shift after they put it together. Those rough areas were required for thebest flow characteristics. Similar to intake ports!

I had no idea that it would be that hard to do so I have decided to just put it back together the way it was except for the EV27 cam and roller rockers and adjustable pushrods and the CV car. That should make me happy. Now if I could just afford to buy a new front fender and a new tank and paint. I know I can do the paint myself. Done it a hundred times.
Ditto what was already said about the port and polish and flow- it's worth it (really!!), but take it to someone who has proven they know what they're doing. This is one of those few things that, unless you'rereally lucky (like running a dozen 7s on a table lucky) you'll end up really pissed that you have to replace parts.
I had a guy once show me what was involved on doing a set of heads... when they say art, they're way not kidding - knowing where and what to do and what not to do... Wheee... If I was turning a wrench for a living still, I'd spend the serious bucks to set myself up and practice practice practice... but yeah, it's not normally a DIY kinda thing.
