Default How much is normal oil loss from breather?

How much oil usage is normal from blowing it out the breather?

On my '86 (bottom breather) I was losing about 3/4 quart every 1000 miles.

Now I just replaced the cam to the EV-13 and did maybe 800 miles...it looks like I only lost a couple ounces....is that normal with this cam? I still need to check to see that there is intake/exhaust coming at the breather tube but I did see fresh oil residue at my breather filter so I don't think there is a problem there. And I was careful to line up timing marks when I replaced the cam.

I can see another cam making a tiny bit of difference because of different valve timing but if it's losing 3/4 quart per 800 miles, it's politely asking for the top end to be rebuilt. That much out the breather only, would leave oil dripping off the bike from the engine to the rear fender after 100 miles of riding. Rings and gaskets are about 125.00 if you do it yourself. Probably would want to do a valve job, about 50 -$75 more.

Hey T150, .....I was losing that much before the cam change. Now I a barely losing any.

After the cam change my oil loss has reduced to only about 2 ounces over the last 800 miles.

I always would have a wet breather filter but never spraying oil all over the place. So something changed, and I guess for the better...it just doesn't make sense to me yet.

Oh, I didn't know you'd ridden it that much after the cam change.... about a quart every 1000 miles is a lot for an Evo.

You got me!
Never heard or dreamed of such luck. So all I can say is; be happy

cam shouldnt effect breather timing, sounds like your sumping(to much oil in the lower end)you might want to check your breather timing, not just the marks, but actual opening & closing of the breather,a must on any single cam big twin
