ultima 6spd
considering dropping an ultima 6spd into my 97 fat boy , running along in fifth just seems like one more gear is needed. anyone out there done this ? performance ? what else is needed to make this change ... clutches, belt, pulleys etc... . have not done one of these and will do it my self so any info related to this swap is appreciated . thx
I have also thinking about the Ultima, I'll pass on the little I know as I have had mine down to the trans shaft before.
Won't be any performance gains as same gearing with 6th being .86 overdrive, I have dropped 2 teeth on the trans pulley to gain accelleration and checking into the 6 speed to lose some 75 mph rpm's, something you can consider as many of the newer bike 6 speed owners do this to make 6th gear more useable, you can use the same belt with the pulley change but the axle will be at the end of adjustment, I removed some material for future adjustment
A stock 80" might struggle pulling 6th gear so the trans pulley change might have to happen so check into the base engine power.
You dont have to disassemble the clutch, it comes off as a assembly but a good time to replace it - needs a tool to compress the outer disc to remove the snap ring to get the discs out if you want to replace it
Need a special socket to remove the trans pulley nut, pulley can be tough to get off, can use the same trans pulley with this gearset - looks like Baker supplies a different pulley
I have read about a trans front bearing removal tool but havn't looked any deeper. Possible trap door support tool but don't know if it is needed on this installation
Advertised as no grinding needed BUT can't answer that one for sure.
Havn't heard of anything negative about the Ultima 6 besides Chinese, other main trans companies gears come from China so that is a toss up but Ohio State and Northern Kentucky University tell me I can only afford the Ultima

I replaced my stock trans with the RevTech 6 Speed Conversion. Used the same case, just replaced the gears.
My engine is still at 80 ci however it has been totally rebuilt with SE heads, EV27 cam, S&S Super E Shorty and true duals with Rush Slipons.
Riding 2 - up I wont even try to drop it into 6th unless I am pushing 70 mph. Riding solo, 65 mph.
No issues, have 15k on it now and i wouldn't go back.

sounds relitively easy . the idea behind this change is to give the motor a breather on those long runs riding two up . maybe some longer legs on those faster runs . trying to watch my budget also . i have seen a 6spd by " roadmax" but no nothing about it . baker sounds good ,looks good, but the price is out of my range at this time. ideas?
