Dude, that EVO your forking is got you riding a classic that has saved you thousands of $$$$ over these super priced new scooters that aren't near as dependable overall. Don't be pissed........keep you focus on the BIG PICTURE.
Thanks guys. Yeah, I am focused on the big picture. Its been a very reliable motorcycle thus far. I just know that when I am aggravated... working on a bike always leads to scratched and dented parts. Something I don't want happening to this motorcycle. I brought it to a trusted Indy. He'll take care of it, I'll bite my tongue and pay the bill. I just hope its something that isn't too big a deal. If it hadn't standard me in the dead of night, below freezing temps and in front of a patch holder.... I would have been dealing with this in a whole different way. But we take life's adventures as the come, right?
My voltage regulator failed one day coming home from work. 40 mile drive. The regulator had about 18,000 miles on it.
I can't say when it failed but when I arrived at home the battery was hotter than a firecracker. It felt like one more degree hotter and it would have burst into flames or exploded.
I pulled the battery and set it outside to cool down.
I checked the stator and it seemed okay. I checked the regulator and the higher the engine revved, the higher the voltage went. I replaced the regulator and battery and found that the ignition module had been damaged as well. With a new ignition module, the bike ran fine again.
The regulator that failed was an aftermarket and I replaced it with genuine H-D.

Along with all the other suggestions above, it could be the battery shorted out. It happens occasionally, the led flakes off of the plates and eventuall shorts out the bottom of the battery causing it to turn into a "crockpot" boiling out the electrolite.

OK I get being pissed off about being stranded in freezing temps but what does being in front of a patch holder have to do with anything?
But you are right when you say that individually they are OK...collectively is a different story....don't expect any alliegiance or protection in a crisis, they live by their own code.
