you got a stock harley v grind cam.

the lobes on the cam force the valves to open. the shape, size & angle change the duration of how long the valve will stay open for and how rapid it will open. back in the old days it wasn't uncommon for guys to have stock cams recut to an almost verticle lobe so they open them slam shut. if you go look at the swap meets i guarantee you'll find some old shovel and pan cams that look like they were run across a bench grinder.

if you are really new and that doesnt quite make sense, this is the easiest way i can break it down, your cam is almost a regulator for intake and exhaust

Lifter coming apart usually means a total engine go thru.

I decided on a Crane 356B cam when I built my Evo. It has similar characteristics to the EV27. I am very pleased with the torque and HP and at .500" lift it doesn't strain the valve train. At 550 lbs my chopper is on the light side so am not sure how this cam would perform on a heavier dresser. The bike does the 1/8 mi in 8.2 sec/88 mph.

Be sure to rinse out the cam chest, oil lines (replace them if they are old!!), and flush out the oil tank. This will ensure that no metal particles are left behind, as they will rear their ugly head again and cost you some more money!! Oh and make sure the pushrods are some type of EZ install so you don't have to remove the rocker boxes. Hope this helps.

Yea i am planning on digging into it a bit to make sure there are no metal anywhere. The oil i drained looked good and so far the there was no chunks or needle bearings in the cam area, but i plan to pull the oil lines, oil cooler and oil pump and flush them good before i start puting everything back together.I am also going with some adjustable pushrods.thanks again for the info.

I just put in ths S&S 510 cam, push rods, and lifters from Feuling in mine....Holly Cow what a massive difference. Couldn't tell you if S&S 510 was better than th EV 27 but I love mine. I have a one tooth larger drive pulley on the trans so it helped out tons with my low end. Cruises at 80, have been at 110 a couple times..... Cams are fun....

Thanks for all the info on my newbie questions, I love how willing everyone is to share information on this site.

I do of course have a follow up question. If you upgrade your came and install the adjustable pushrods as suggested, and of course I read where you have to make sure your valves are adjusted will the stock tranny/clutch and all of the other components be satisfactory or do you need to replace some of these components?

Make sure you change out that cam nearing to a torrington and get the right color coded pinion gear to match your new cam. Change out your breather gear to a metal one while your at it. And lastly your gonna need to shim your cam so pick up an assortmant
