Electrical is going to have a thermistor that you attach to something, then run wires to your gauge. Mechanical is going to have a probe of some type that you attach to something with likely a copper tube running up to the gauge. You probably want to go with the electrical type.

The 'mechanical' one will be analogue, rather like a simple thermometer, using good ole fashioned technology to give a reading, which will be on a dial gauge. The sensor will be connected directly to the gauge, dipped in oil, like those dip-stick thermometers. The electronic one will have a remote sensor, dipped in the oil, but connected to the gauge by wires and needing power from the bike's battery.

The gauge on your link has a digital display, which requires power, and comes with a sender (the sensor) and harness.

mechanical is VERY VERY easy to install, just make sure it is liquid filled so it doesn't bounce all over the place. You don't have to, but its nice to look down at the needle not bouncing all over the place!

Thanks for the info guys. Understand , now. But failed to realize, trying to save money, looking at automotive gauges, I don't think they would hold up in the elements, so I guess I'll have to spend a little more & get the Dakota gauge which is waterproof.

Default Will Work

I stand corrected. Called Jegg's tech support & they said these gauges are sealed & mounting one on a bike would cause no problems. So I can save a little coin! :-)
Ride safe,
Harold
