Default What causes kickback?

New to me old evo. Sometimes if i stop the motor when its hot for just a few mins, when i go to start, it kind of kicks back, makes a terrible noise puffs a bit, then starts up the next push of the button and runs normal. S&S carb if it matters. Just every now and then, why? Thanks.

Aggresive idle timing, heat soaked carb, raised compression, carbon buiidup in combustion chambers, and other things.

It's firing the fuel/air mixture before the spark plug fires.

On my sporty with 10.5 compression and aggresive timing,on hot restart,
I learned if you twist the throttle a couple times and get it a little over rich, it wont buck the starter and try to tear the teeth off the ring gear.

Great explaination, please humor me on "aggressive idle timing". Is that the same as advanced timing? Thanks.

Schex is all over it, you should hear the sound of the starter clutch ripping out when the engine kicks, after it does it once you start grittin your teeth like your getting ready to get kicked in the nuts everytime you put your thumb on the starter button.

Yep, little higher initial, and steep curve, better response off idle, less carb farts, with the w8s's that's in it.

So? Give a twist or 2 before a hot start?

Try tapping the starter button to get it past the compression stroke before you try to start it.

Won't hurt to try it.

It won't hurt to strip and clean all the high power connectors to your starter, to make sure they are clean and working at their best.
