I know how you feel. I had a chance to buy that original bike I rode in '92 and I passed...kicked myself ever since. Glad I can stop now. Foot was getting sore.

The gasket/sealing area on that part of the primary doesnt follow the outline of the primary....hard to explain. You'll see what I mean when you change it.

The gap is normal....The gasket is a different shape than the primary cover.
Go back to mid controls and get some longer fork tubes so that you can take advantage of the most rideable Harley ever built.

Nice bike!

I'm going to give the position time. My Fatbob has mids and is setup for cornering. These forwards are actually not too far forward. Very comfortable but still good leverage and control. I'll take it on Angel's Crest and see how it feels. Suspension is actually nice, but I haven't really tested lean angle which I know will be less than the bob. Not sure I need this to be a blaster, but don't what it to be hobbled either. If I "Duo-Glide" the Dyna than I will for sure reclaim the FXR's full handling potential.
