1989 FLH, No Spark. Have service manual - starting to read.

Any tips or "first place to start" on diagnosing this ? Usual culprits ?

or melted cam pickup, if it gets bad enough.

any prior symptoms? or did it just die out of the blue (out of the blue would sound more like a module or more likely, coil).

Only a few things to check....ign pick up, coil, broken wire or module.

Substitution is the only real test.

The 2 wires at the coil one should be batt. + with key on other should be a ground that will flash while cranking eng. if both are good replace the coil .

Back to work on bike - found coil. With wires on coil and key turned on, I measure 10.92 Volts on left small (primary) post, get 10.88 Volts on right.

Then took wires off coil, measured 11,300 ohms across big posts (secondary). Service manual calls for 11,250 to 13,750 ohms. So seems OK.

However measuring across small terminals (primary), first I get open circuit, then after 20 seconds or so I get 7 M ohms. This is Mega ohms ?

The spec across primary coils calls for 2.5-3.1 ohms. So this seems way out of specification, right ?

Here's picture of coil: http://postimg.org/image/ek0a2cpet/

Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks for your help !

If your coil failed the test I would replace it.

Sounds like the primary side is open. New coil time.
